Dr. Henrietta Mears, a Christian educator from the early 1900s, said, “It is our duty to do all we can to introduce every generation to Christ.” Not only is Dr. Mears one of my heroes, but her teachings and legacy influenced many of Christianity’s greats. Bill and Vonette Bright (founders of Campus Crusade for Christ), Jim Rayburn (founder of Young Life), and Billy Graham all credit Dr. Mears as having a direct impact on their life and ministry.
When I think about Dr. Mears’ life and ministry, I always wonder what would have happened if she had not obeyed the Lord and followed His call to introduce every generation to Christ. Would the same 220 million people have heard Billy Graham preach? Would Young Life have reached over 2 million kids in over 100 countries? Would Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) have ministries in almost 200 countries?
As the Director of Cherrydale’s Children’s Ministry, I’m burdened with the knowledge that these accomplishments may not have been possible if Dr. Mears hadn’t first heard and responded to the gospel herself as a child. Every Sunday, we have the privilege of teaching the gospel to over 125 children. What if the next Henrietta Mears is being rocked in our infant room on Sunday? Or singing about how big our God is in the 2- and 3-year-old class? Or learning Bible stories from the Old Testament in elementary classes?
We don’t know what God’s plans are for each child that attends our Children’s Ministry programs, but we do know that God wants them all to know Him (Deuteronomy 4, 11) and His great love for them shown through Jesus (Matthew 28:19-20). Will you partner with us in Children’s Ministry and help to tell these children of the glorious deeds of the Lord?
“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, and the wonders that He has done” (Psalm 78:4).
