In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). The observance of Lent encourages us to think more deeply about the amazing sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross.
There’s no fixed way to observe this season. Comparisons can be drawn between Lenten practices and Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness: Some Christians use fasting, repentance, moderation, and self-denial as particular emphases during Lent.
